INTERMEDIATE MOVES

Although intermediate moves are very important, the subject is often overlooked in chess training. In this chapter you will find some intermediate move exercises. The first ones are easier, while those at the end are more difficult.

An intermediate move is an “in-between” move that helps set up a very good follow-up move. In order to help you with the exercises in this chapter, I will give you hints to get your mind to focus in the right direction.

This is the one type of tactical motif that I am glad I learned at a very early age. It really helped me stay ahead of the competition. I taught my sisters the same thing when they started to play, and I have followed the same method in my teaching over the years.

1. White to move. If White plays 1.Nxf5 Black replies 1…Bxb4 and the game would be even. With an intermediate move, White can win a piece. What is this move?
